Nutritional Counselling

I am passionate about improving your health through nutrition.  I offer advice on a wide variety of conditions.

Having over 15 years experience working in the field of dietetics I have been able to gain a wide variety of experience and skills to be able to help you to make dietary changes.  The correct nutrition is vital for maintaining whole body health - mind, heart, gut, immunity, hormones and lots more.  

I am available to provide nutritional counselling on a wide variety of conditions and dietary choices.

An initial consultation will take an hour.

Mental Health
The brain, like any part of the body, is nourished by food and it is important to keep it well-nourished for optimum performance. This session details the nutrients that are essential for keeping the brain healthy and to help to combat anxiety and depression.  

I will also discuss the importance of the Gut Brain Axis.  The gut is now considered the second brain.  70% of the nerve fibres in the gut are communicating messages from the gut to the brain.
 The microbes living in our guts have been shown to influence our mood, stress response, memory. behaviour and promote a healthy immune system.  I wil provide advice on the dietary changes that encourage a healthy gut brain axis.

If wanted I can also discuss the correct nutrition to minimise your risk of developing dementia.

Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is very common, affecting 5–10 per cent of women. Women with PCOS are at greater risk of developing long term health problems such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. This appointment will guide you through making healthy dietary changes to reduce your risk of developing these health problems. Glucose control is also very important with PCOS and this appointment goes through the types of carbohydrates to choose to achieve good blood sugar control.

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
Are you struggling with PMS?  SImple dietary changes can hlep to manage some of the symptoms and make you feel more in control of your body.  I will explain what your hormones are doing and how focusing on certain nutrients at different times of your cycle can be of help to you.

Boosting the Immune System
There are lots of different foods that should be included in the diet to ensure that your immune system is working as effectively as it can to keep you feeling strong and healthy. Book in for a session on your immune system to learn more.

Veganism
According to the latest research by the Vegan Society, conducted in 2016, there are estimated to be around 540,000 vegans in Great Britain (just over 1% of the population) and this number is set to rise. If you are thinking about becoming vegan this is a good appointment to go through what it entails and if it is right for you. If you are already following a vegan diet It is very important to ensure that all your nutritional needs are being met so that deficiencies do not occur.

Vegetarianism
In 2016 there were about 1.14 million people in Britain following a vegetarian diet and this number is set to increase. If you are following this sort of diet it is very important to ensure that all your nutritional needs are being met so that deficiencies do not occur.

Disordered Eating Patterns 
Disordered eating refers to a variety of unhealthy eating habits. Examples include binge eating, under eating, meal skipping and obsessive calorie counting. Disordered eating can have a negative impact on a person's emotional, social and physical wellbeing. If you or a loved one is struggling to have a healthy relationship with food I can help to re-form a positive and healthy relationship with food and to help you or your loved one to become stronger and healthier.

Cholesterol Lowering Diets 
Raised cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Dietary changes can help to reduce cholesterol and thereby reduce your risk for these diseases.  

Weight Management 
Being overweight or obese increases your risk of heart disease, stroke, metabolic syndrome, diabetes and cancer. I can provide guidance on how to lose weight safely and effectively so that your risk for these diseases decreases.  The importance of gut health and the circadian rhythm are explained in this appointment as well as the role of the glycaemic index.

Hypothyroidism 
With an underactive thyroid, it can be hard to lose weight. A dietary assessment can help you to look at your nutritional intake to ensure that it is appropriate for weight loss but at the same time ensure that it is nutritionally adequate.  This session will also cover which nutrients are vital for thyroid health and the foods/nutrients that you need to avoid.

How much weight to gain during pregnancy
Number of additional calories needed during each trimester
Nutrition for morning sickness, heartburn and constipation
Essential nutrients needed during pregnancy 
Caffeine, alcohol and pregnancy
Managing your weight after pregnancy
